WWE’s social media presence was briefly thrown into chaos after one of the company’s official accounts was compromised, resulting in a bizarre cryptocurrency scam being promoted to its followers.
On Friday, WWE’s official Instagram account was hacked. Shortly after gaining access, the hackers published a post attempting to promote a cryptocurrency coin using WWE’s name, potentially misleading fans into believing the promotion was behind the project.
The post quickly gained attention online, but WWE was able to regain control of the account and remove the fraudulent content. The incident appears to have been resolved relatively quickly, limiting the amount of time the scam remained visible to the company’s followers.
Cryptocurrency scams involving hacked social media accounts have become increasingly common, with compromised accounts frequently being used to promote fraudulent coins, investment schemes, or other financial scams. While these incidents often target individual users, major brands and high-profile accounts have also fallen victim to similar attacks.
Fortunately for WWE, the company was able to reclaim its Instagram account and delete the misleading post before the situation escalated further.
