Sami Zayn is once again WWE Champion.
During this week’s episode of WWE SmackDown, Zayn challenged CM Punk for the WWE Championship in a rematch stemming from last week’s show, when Punk successfully defended the title against Johnny Gargano. Zayn attempted to assist Gargano during that match, and Gargano returned the favor this week.
Zayn appeared to have Punk in trouble when he applied the Anaconda Vice, nearly forcing Zayn to tap out. However, Candice LeRae distracted the referee, preventing the submission from being recognized.
Gargano then attempted to use the WWE Championship against Punk, but Punk avoided the attack and hit Gargano with a GTS.
The situation became even more chaotic when Kevin Owens made his way to the ring. Owens attempted to strike Zayn with the championship belt, but Zayn moved, causing Owens to hit Punk instead.
Zayn then hit Owens with a low blow before turning his attention back to Punk. He followed up with a Helluva Kick to the champion and scored the pinfall victory.
With the win, Zayn has officially become a two-time WWE Champion.
Earlier in the night, Gargano told Zayn that if he defeated Punk, Gargano would be next in line for the WWE Championship. That could set up an interesting situation now that Zayn has reclaimed the title.
