Welcome to another eWrestlingNews Question of the Day! It’s been reported recently that The Lucha Bros may not be re-signing with All Elite Wrestling. Instead, they could leave AEW altogether and actually join the WWE roster, going straight to Raw or SmackDown, as opposed to having a stint in NXT.
My question for you today is two-fold. “Should Rey Fenix and Penta El Zero Miedo go to WWE? If so, which brand would you put them on?”
Remember to answer with your response in the comments below.
As far as my answer…
Remember, if you’re looking for a quick resource of which WWE Superstars are on which roster, here’s your best page.
In my mind, this is a rather easy call, and only because of one set of teams: The Bloodline.
Now, that might read as though I’m saying The Lucha Bros should go to SmackDown in order to compete against them. However, that’d be 100% in the opposite direction. In fact, I think The Bloodline holding SmackDown’s WWE Tag Team Championship titles means Penta and Fenix absolutely shouldn’t go to the blue brand, and must end up on Monday Night Raw.
Whether it stays Tama Tonga and Jacob Fatu, or we get some Freebird Rule / No Quarter Catch Crew’s “Catch Clause” type manipulation of the championships and Tonga Loa, Talla Tonga and Solo Sikoa get their hands on the gold, I think we’re still ultimately looking at the same endgame. Injuries aside, I can’t imagine there is any way WrestleMania 41 does not include Jimmy and Jey Uso reforming The Usos tag team to fight two of those for those titles.
If The Lucha Bros were to go to SmackDown in the meantime, even if it were January 2025, by all means, they wouldn’t be able to win those titles. We can assume the 2025 WWE Draft will take place sometime relatively soon after WrestleMania 41, and I’ve never been a big fan of bringing someone onto a brand, just to switch them so soon after.
By putting them on the Raw roster, they have plenty great teams to work opposite from in the ring, as well as a third hour to find themselves getting a spot on the card. I don’t feel like there is a guaranteed setup for the world tag titles for WrestleMania 2025 in the same way The Usos vs The Bloodline feels locked. This means The Lucha Bros could find themselves in contention against any number of teams like American Made, Alpha Academy, Awesome Truth, The Judgment Day, The Wyatt Sicks, The Final Testament, The New Day and arguably the most interesting scenario, The Latino World Order.
That in and of itself sparks another discussion: would/should Fenix and Penta join the LWO?
I’m of two opinions. Without knowing the rest of the setup of who is doing what by the time The Lucha Bros were to join WWE—as different plans could alter a lot of other things in a domino effect—I’d be tempted not to put them in the LWO. Instead, to have them be heels feuding with Rey Mysterio, Dragon Lee and company.
Carlito feels like an odd fit in The Judgment Day, and I don’t think this pairing between Dominik Mysterio and Liv Morgan is going to last for the long haul, either. I do think Finn Balor and JD McDonagh can stay allies, but I’d like to see The Judgment Day split up in the coming months, and for Dom and Carlito to be in a partnership outside of that.
That could expand into The Lucha Bros being their allies, possibly with an eight-man tag team match at WrestleMania (Rey Mysterio, Dragon Lee, Cruz Del Toro and Joaquin Wilde versus Dominik Mysterio, Carlito, Rey Fenix and Penta El Zero Miedo).
Of course, The Lucha Bros popping up as babyface so the crowd can properly cheer them as they would want to is not a bad decision whatsoever, and I would just as easily be down to see something like The Lucha Brothers against The Creed Brothers, as I’d imagine that would be an awesome match. But there are more opportunities for them on Raw right now than on SmackDown, where they’ll be forced to have non-title feuds in an attempt to keep them away from The Bloodline.
