Saturday night’s episode of AEW Collision featured its own botched three-count just one day after WWE SmackDown was marred by a similar mistake.
Friday night’s edition of WWE SmackDown saw Sami Zayn successfully defend the Undisputed WWE Championship against Kevin Owens, but the conclusion of the match quickly became a talking point. After CM Punk struck Owens with the championship belt, Zayn immediately covered his opponent. The referee appeared to count three, but the bell never sounded, and Owens lifted his shoulder as though he had kicked out.
Reports indicated that Owens was not actually supposed to kick out, with the original plan calling for the belt shot to lead directly to the finish. Zayn subsequently delivered a Helluva Kick to secure the official three-count and retain his championship.
A similar issue occurred during Saturday’s episode of AEW Collision, where Andrade El Idolo defended the National Championship against Daniel Garcia.
Andrade has been defending the title since winning it from Mark Davis at AEW Redemption in July. The champion had previously put the championship on the line against the likes of Jack Perry, Nick Wayne, Gabe Kidd, and The Beast Mortos before facing Garcia on the September 19 episode of Collision.
The match ended with Andrade countering Garcia’s submission attempt into a roll-up. Garcia managed to reverse the pinning predicament, leading to a series of exchanges between the two wrestlers.
During the sequence, the referee and commentary team appeared to count to three, creating confusion over whether a pinfall had actually been scored. Andrade eventually reversed another roll-up and officially retained the National Championship.
The Death Riders immediately attacked Andrade following the match, with PAC stepping up to challenge the champion. PAC’s challenge for the National Championship at All Out was later made official during the broadcast.
