AJ Styles officially wrapped up his WWE in-ring career at the 2026 Royal Rumble, where he faced GUNTHER in his retirement match. With his career on the line, Styles came up short, seemingly bringing an end to his time as an active wrestler.
However, Styles has not completely closed the door on returning to the ring someday. The former WWE Champion has previously noted that most wrestlers come out of retirement at least once, and he recently explained what it would take for him to make another comeback.
Speaking on a recent edition of his “The AJ Styles Show,” Styles said the deciding factor would be whether he could eventually share the ring with his sons on a major stage. He said,
“How long is it going to take my son, or sons, to get into a position where I’m able to do the show with them that matters? If it doesn’t matter…I’ll be honest with you, I’m probably not going to come back for an indie show, even if it’s to wrestle my boys. I’m probably not doing that. I don’t mind being a special guest like a manager, but if I do come back, hopefully I’m not 60 and it’s on a big show. What father wouldn’t want to come back and tag with his sons? I don’t know if that opportunity will come because it depends on how long it’s going to take.”
Styles’ son Avery has already begun booking dates with GCW, showing that he is taking steps toward establishing himself in wrestling. However, Avery was also the subject of controversy over the weekend following claims that he was not particularly helpful while GCW was in Minneapolis, MN.
