CM Punk’s return to this week’s RAW saw him capture the Undisputed WWE Championship. He stepped in to replace Cody Rhodes and defeat Sami Zayn to secure the title in his hometown of Chicago.
According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the plans for the WWE Title at SummerSlam were always Cody Rhodes vs. CM Punk. It could easily be that with the booking where Punk won the world title without ever beating Rhodes.
The report also noted that whilst a Rhodes vs. Punk has always been planned for SummerSlam, a triple threat or fatal-4-way is also possible.
