Kendal Grey walked out of WWE NXT with her championship intact, but she also left with a painful reminder of just how brutal NXT Underground can be.

The reigning NXT Women’s Champion successfully defended her title against Lola Vice on this week’s episode of NXT, overcoming one of the toughest challenges of her reign. Entering the match, Grey faced a daunting task as Vice was undefeated in the Underground format with a perfect 4-0 record and brought legitimate combat sports experience from her time competing in Bellator MMA.

Grey’s night took a turn when she was hit a hard strike that split open her ear, leaving blood pouring down the side of her head. Medical personnel quickly stepped in during the contest, wrapping a large bandage around her head so she could continue instead of being forced to stop the match.

Despite the injury, Grey refused to back down. She weathered Vice’s offense before locking in a tight armbar, forcing the former MMA standout to submit and handing Vice her first-ever loss in an NXT Underground match.

After the show, Grey shared a video on Twitter revealing the extent of the damage, showing that the inside of her ear had been badly torn during the match. The footage quickly drew praise from fans, many of whom applauded the champion for battling through the injury to retain her title.

The match concluded with a show of sportsmanship as Grey and Vice bowed to one another before embracing in the ring. Grey also raised Vice’s hand following the contest, while the emotional challenger fought back tears after suffering the defeat.
