WWE Legend’s Death Confirmed After Six Years

The death of WWE legend George Wells has been confirmed, nearly six years after he passed away.

Pwinsider is reporting that Wells’ son, Jason Wells, confirmed that his father died in early 2020. Wells was reportedly 72 years old at the time of his death.

Wells enjoyed a professional wrestling career that spanned from 1974 through 1992. He spent much of his career working throughout the NWA territories before joining WWE, where he competed from 1984 to 1986. He is perhaps best remembered for his appearance at WrestleMania II, where he faced Jake “The Snake” Roberts.

According to Jason Wells, his father’s death was related to several serious health issues. George Wells suffered from kidney problems that required dialysis and also battled diabetes.

Despite passing away in early 2020, news of Wells’ death went largely unnoticed by wrestling fans. His passing was briefly mentioned in a footnote to an article written by author Brad Balukjian for The Ringer, which focused on WrestleMania II.

When Pwinsider contacted Balukjian regarding Wells’ death, he explained that he had specifically looked into what happened to the former WWE star while researching his WrestleMania II story. He said,

“I had always been curious about what happened to George Wells. He seemed to vanish from sight and no one for years had heard much of him, which is unusual given all the connections of the internet wrestling community.”

Balukjian explained that Wells’ appearance at WrestleMania II led him to conduct additional research, eventually allowing him to track down Wells’ former wife, Nancy, in Oregon. He said,

“Since he was on the WrestleMania 2 card facing Jake Roberts, I did a deep dive during my reporting for my story on that event for The Ringer, and was able to reach his ex-wife in Oregon, Nancy. She told me on the phone that he had passed away a few years back, but did not seem to want to elaborate, only that he had had lots of health issues.”

Balukjian also attempted to contact Wells’ son, Jason, but was initially unsuccessful. He said,

“George also has a son, Jason, living in the Berkeley/Oakland area of California, but he did not reply to my emails and messages. I was saddened to hear of the loss and wish the best to his surviving family and friends.”
