What Is The Best Object On A Pole Match In Wrestling History? | Question Of The Day

Last night on WWE Raw, a stipulation was added to the Danhausen vs. Dominik Mysterio match for SummerSlam wherein it will now be a “Human Monies” on a pole match.

The reaction to this has been split, which has me wondering if anyone can even remember the last good ____ on a pole match.

Was it Judy Bagwell? Yoshi Tatsu’s action figure leg match?

My question for you today is “What are your favorite ‘on a pole’ matches in pro wrestling history?”

As far as my answer…

I’m legitimately blanking on any that I can remember being good. Most of them that I can remember are just silly and ridiculous.

The image above is the Mistletoe on a Pole match that I could not remember off the top of my head, but an example of something I do think worked rather well for the time and in that era, which was how when WWE didn’t let the women’s division have ladder matches, this was the closest thing they could get. Considering how many of the women from that era couldn’t be trusted to work with the ladders, and were botching this pole concept as it was, I thought this was usually a pretty effective way of trying to make the best out of a bad situation. Thankfully, we’ve got a talented enough roster and the company is willing to let them do ladder matches now properly and we don’t have to resort to this, but during the Divas era, these were fine.

I normally like it best when the pole has something on it that can be used as a weapon, and the objective isn’t to just pull something down from the pole, but to be able to use it first. Sometimes, a contract like the Calgary Kid thing would be fun, but I would typically just think it should’ve been a ladder match with the contract hanging from the ceiling instead. If it’s a pole that has a nightstick like in 1992 with Big Boss Man and Nailz, then I think it’s a little more interesting than to just call something a “Chairs Match” and they can use chairs that are ringside, or a “kendo stick match” gets an upgrade if the kendo stick is on the pole and out of reach.

This is not a gimmick I call for on a regular basis outside of one scenario: a flag pole.

If it is a flag match between two people who are of two different nationalities (or I guess you could do a flag of two separate factions logos like a Capture the Flag type of thing), then I think that’s something you can play around with. The trick is you can’t have John Cena WIN a flag match and THEN retrieve the flag. That still goes down as one of the most ridiculous ways WWE booked something that I can remember. A flag match is good if you have to pull your flag off the pole and wave it. Then, though, it’s called a flag match, and suddenly loses the emphasis on the pole, and we’re not here to argue the semantics between those two!
