The Latest On Corey Graves’ Situation With WWE, If Twitter Rant Was A Work

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting the timeline of events that resulted in Corey Graves being absent from WWE television following his move to NXT last week.

As we’ve been reporting here on eWn, Corey Graves took to Twitter on Monday night to rant about losing his dream job as an in-ring talent and moving to commentary, where he became “f***ing awesome at it” before being told “you’re not famous enough for your own job.”

While Graves promised he’d have much to say on WWE NXT, he did not appear on commentary on Tuesday night. Instead, he flew back home to Pittsburgh, PA. Graves’ comments are not a work and were things he had said privately over the last week or so.

According to the new report, at some point last year, Graves was slated to move from RAW to SmackDown, where he would provide commentary alongside Joe Tessitore after Michael Cole returned to RAW. However, WWE later opted for Wade Barrett to take the SmackDown role instead. When Graves showed up in NXT, it was apparent that he was not pleased.

Some people within WWE speculated that Graves’ tweets were an effort to get himself fired, while other sources indicated that he was attempting to “blur the lines” and generate fan engagement.

This strategy might have worked, as the first quarter of Tuesday’s episode (where he teased he had a “lot to say”) drew 883,000 viewers (275,000 in the 18-49 demographic) and 827,000 viewers (224,000 in 18-49) for the first 45 minutes.

Nevertheless, Graves was sent home and did not appear on Tuesday’s episode. He also missed this week’s episode of WWE Speed.

One source remarked that the situation involving Graves is not a work. It was noted that although the WWE announcer may be conveying to others that it is a work, and while it might develop into one, it actually started as a shoot.
