**SPOILER** – Chelsea Green’s WWE Women’s Championship Future Takes A Major Turn

Chelsea Green’s reign as WWE Women’s Champion has taken another unexpected turn, with a major update emerging regarding her status heading into September.

Green captured the interim WWE Women’s Championship at SummerSlam 2026 in a Ladder Match, but she has yet to officially defend the title. Her reign was immediately thrown into question after she suffered an orbital fracture during a tag team bout alongside Tiffany Stratton against WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Fatal Influence, consisting of Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid.

WWE SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis initially ordered Green to surrender the championship due to her injury. However, the Hot Mess refused to give up the title. Aldis ultimately gave her 30 days to defend the championship, creating a race against time for the newly crowned champion.

SPOILER WARNING: The following contains spoilers from the September 4 episode of SmackDown, taped on August 24 in Cleveland, Ohio.

On the August 28 edition of SmackDown, which was taped earlier in Ottawa on August 24, Green joined forces with Stratton to take on Nia Jax and Lash Legend of The Irresistible Forces.

The match ended badly for Green when she was caught by Jax’s devastating Annihilator. The move allowed the former WWE Women’s Champion to score the pinfall victory over Green.

Following the broadcast, WWE immediately taped the September 4 episode in Cleveland. During the taping, Aldis appeared alongside a WWE doctor to provide an update on Green’s championship situation.

Green made it clear that she was not prepared to surrender the opportunity she had spent years chasing. The champion passionately told Aldis that she did not wait 13 years for her chance at the top only to have it taken away because of an injury.

Then came the major announcement.

The WWE doctor revealed that Green had officially been medically cleared to compete. However, there was one major condition attached to her clearance: Green must wear a protective mask covering her face whenever she competes.

The announcement was met with a huge reaction from the Cleveland crowd, with Green finally receiving confirmation that her championship reign could continue.

Her celebration did not last long.

Nia Jax interrupted the proceedings and immediately demanded a championship opportunity. Jax argued that because she defeated Green the previous week, she had already earned the right to challenge for the title.

Stratton stepped up on Green’s behalf, evening the odds and making it clear that she also wants another opportunity to become WWE Women’s Champion.

Rather than immediately hand either woman a title match, Aldis decided to settle the issue in the ring.

He announced that Jax and Stratton will face each other on the September 14 episode of SmackDown in Mexico City. The winner of that match will become the Number One Contender for Chelsea Green’s WWE Women’s Championship.
