Report – Is AEW Interested In John Cena

The idea of getting John Cena out of retirement with a massive payday appears to be dead on arrival.

Cena has officially stepped away from in-ring competition and has repeatedly made it clear that he has no plans to wrestle again. When asked about the possibility of returning, Cena famously suggested that doing so would amount to “financial suicide” unless a promoter was “in the business of torching currency.”

For those wondering whether AEW could ever be the company willing to make such a move, that doesn’t appear to be the case.

Fightful Select is reporting that AEW has not discussed bringing Cena in since his retirement, nor was a potential AEW run ever viewed as a realistic possibility. There is also a contractual obstacle standing in the way.

Cena remains under a multi-year WWE contract in an ambassadorial role. According to the claim within WWE when the matter was raised, Cena would not be contractually permitted to wrestle for another promotion.

Meanwhile, Cena’s John Cena Classic tournament remains in the works for later this year. As of now, December is being targeted for the event, although that date remains subject to change.
