As we previously reported here on eWn, Sheamus is expected to leave WWE when his current contract expires after being offered a reduced deal, leading him to move on from the company. The situation is said to be similar to the contract discussions involving Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods.

The reasoning behind the decision is believed to reflect TKO’s current approach to roster management. The company is reportedly prioritizing major financial investments in talent who are considered significant business drivers, while becoming more selective with veterans whose drawing power is viewed differently. At 48 years old and having dealt with several injuries in recent years, Sheamus ultimately fell into that category.

Attention now turns to whether AEW will pursue the former WWE World Champion. While his age may be a consideration, Sheamus has continued to deliver standout performances whenever healthy. AEW has seen mixed results when signing former WWE stars, with some becoming major successes while others have struggled to establish themselves.

Much of Sheamus’ potential success outside of WWE could come down to mindset. If he embraces the opportunity to simply wrestle, produce great matches, and build a new chapter of his career, he could thrive. However, if the focus is on proving WWE wrong or using another promotion as a stepping stone back to WWE, history suggests that approach has been less successful.

Although Sheamus remains a respected veteran known for his hard work and in-ring ability, he is generally not viewed as someone who dramatically changes a company’s business on his own. That said, his experience and reputation could still make him an attractive addition for AEW, particularly with stars like MJF who could see value in working with him.

Sheamus is also one of several notable WWE names approaching free agency. Others expected to have their contracts (no-compete clauses) expire later this month include The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods), Alex Shelley, Chris Sabin, Aleister Black, Kairi Sane, Zoey Stark, and Kay Lee Ray. While some of those talents could eventually land in AEW, the promotion already has one of the deepest rosters in wrestling, making it unlikely that every available free agent will be signed.
