Logan Paul caused quite a stir on Thursday after taking to Twitter to refer to a female Olympic boxer as a man.
Paul, who will be defending the WWE United States Championship against LA Knight at SummerSlam 2024 in Cleveland on Saturday, took to Twitter to criticize Olympic boxer Imane Khelif’s 46-second win over Angela Carini by calling her a “man” fighting a woman.
In a now-deleted post, Paul wrote:
“This is the purest form of evil unfolding right before your eyes
A man was allowed to beat up a woman on a global stage, crushing her life’s dream while fighting for her deceased father
This delusion must end”
For those unaware, Khelif (Algeria) was banned from competing at the 2023 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships. The IBA, which has been banned from the Olympics since 2019 over their being backed by Russian state energy firm Gazprom, said that both she and Lin Yu-ting did not meet eligibility requirements to compete in a women’s event. With that being said, they were both cleared by the IOC (International Olympic Committee) to compete at the Paris Olympics. The IOC defended both Khelif and Lin’s eligibility to compete with the following statement:
“According to the IBA minutes available on their website, this decision was initially taken solely by the IBA Secretary General and CEO. The IBA Board only ratified it afterwards and only subsequently requested that a procedure to follow in similar cases in the future be established and reflected in the IBA Regulations. The minutes also say that the IBA should “establish a clear procedure on gender testing
The current aggression against these two athletes is based entirely on this arbitrary decision, which was taken without any proper procedure – especially considering that these athletes had been competing in top-level competition for many years.”
It’s worth noting that Khelif has always competed as a woman, and there is no indication that she is transgender. While she was born as a woman and isn’t trying to transition to a man, she has a DSD. This is a rare condition that only affects between 0.05 and 1% of the population. Also called ‘intersex’ conditions, DSDs can result in outwardly female individuals having male chromosomes or anatomy.
Paul has since posted a follow-up statement that reads as follows,
“‼️ OOPSIES ‼️
I might be guilty of spreading misinformation along with the entirety of this app
Although she’s been previously disqualified for failing a “gender test” and has XY chromosomes, some sources say Imane Khelif was born a biological woman
I stand by my sentiment that biological men should not compete against biological women in any sport and if you disagree you’re a sick f**k”
Please be kind to each other in the comments section, folks.
