Welcome to another eWrestlingNews Question of the Day!

WWE Backlash 2025 is in the bag, so let’s talk about it. What were your highlights and low points? Which moments stood out to you as the best and which ones were the biggest disappointments? Are you shocked at Jeff Cobb? Disappointed no titles changed hands?

My question for you today is “What were your highs and lows for WWE Backlash 2025?”

Remember to answer with your response in the comments below.

As far as my answer…

Overall, I thought this event was VERY much like an important episode of Monday Night Raw, rather than a pay-per-view to follow WrestleMania. It gives me more In Your House vibes. I miss when all pay-per-views felt a little more special and not just the big six (Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber, WrestleMania, Money in the Bank, SummerSlam, Survivor Series) or when they go to another country and have a special act. The smaller events don’t need to be as big, naturally, but outside of just seeing John Cena wrestle in theory alone, what did we see here that isn’t normally done on television?

For example, Dominik Mysterio beating Penta because of Judgment Day interference and El Grande Americano getting involved is a segment that could have been on Raw this week and nobody would have batted an eye. The same for Becky Lynch losing to Lyra Valkyria in a quick pin scenario and beating her up after.

But as much as that’s an overall feel, it’s still not my low, since it encompasses too much. I want to be more specific.

My biggest low is Gunther vs. Pat McAfee. I don’t understand why WWE thinks the best course of action for Gunther’s character is to tap out to a non-submission previously tag team and midcard guy at WrestleMania and follow it up with him wrestling a far more even match with a commentator than should be, considering his dominance over some of the “best” in the wrestling divisions.

If it’s to humble him, why? Are people going to be more interested in seeing a Gunther who isn’t as much of a tough bad ass? I doubt it. Are you punishing him but trying not to bury him? That’d be weird. If it’s because you’re bored with him being unstoppable and you’re willing to downgrade his character just for “something different”? Or, is it for some entirely different reason that I’m just not seeing and may never see, even if the idea actually stays the course and fully plays out instead of “pivoting” to something else?

My highlight, though, is Jeff Cobb.

While I’m not sold on the idea that he should be teaming with Jacob Fatu and Solo Sikoa, I’m just glad in general that he’s in WWE. He’s one of the few guys in New Japan Pro-Wrestling who I watched enough of that I felt he could be a good signing. Lots of others may be good, but I didn’t think most would be a good WWE Superstar in particular (like Hiroshi Tanahashi, for instance, never struck me as a WWE guy) Cobb was one that I thought could fit in well, and I’m glad to see that happen.

There are a lot of people I’m interested in seeing Cobb face, which will be the subject of another EWN QOTD probably for tomorrow. For now, in general, having him show up was the only thing that felt like it happened on this show.
