Former AEW talent Jake “The Snake” Roberts believes WWE has a character problem, not a talent problem.
The WWE Hall of Famer recently shared his thoughts on the current state of professional wrestling following WWE’s wave of post-WrestleMania 42 roster cuts. While the company released several talents in a move that sparked backlash from fans hoping to see ongoing storylines continue, Roberts suggested that the roster could be trimmed even further.
Speaking with wrestling journalist Bill Apter at the 80’s Wrestling Con on May 16, Roberts argued that modern wrestling has drifted too far away from what once made it successful. According to the WWE legend, today’s product suffers from a lack of memorable characters, and he believes promotions should place a greater emphasis on storytelling and grounded in-ring action instead of relying on high-flying performances.
When asked what changes he would make if he were in charge of WWE creative, Roberts didn’t hesitate with his response. He said,
“Fire about half of them. Yes, I would. Just the guys who can actually wrestle. That’s the ones I would keep.”
