Sami Zayn’s Undisputed WWE Championship reign came to an abrupt end on this week’s edition of WWE RAW, sparking a wave of backlash from fans online.
At WWE Night of Champions 2026, Zayn captured the Undisputed WWE Championship by defeating Cody Rhodes and GUNTHER in a Triple Threat match, ending a decade-long wait to become a World Champion once again. He was originally scheduled to defend the title against Rhodes on the July 6 episode of RAW, but those plans unraveled before the match could even begin.
The show opened with Cody Rhodes being attacked backstage by Gunther, leaving him medically unable to compete. WWE officials quickly found a replacement challenger, and the surprise opponent turned out to be Chicago native CM Punk, making his first match since WrestleMania 42.
Although Punk had been out of action for months, he delivered a standout performance and defeated Zayn to capture the Undisputed WWE Championship. The title change ended Zayn’s reign after just nine days, leaving many fans frustrated with how quickly his championship victory was reversed.
The brief reign immediately became a hot topic across social media, with many fans criticizing WWE’s booking decisions. Some questioned why the company crowned Zayn at Night of Champions 2026 only to take the title off him little more than a week later.
Others argued that the short-lived reign diminished the significance of Zayn’s long-awaited World Title victory, with several fans claiming that the booking made him look weak rather than elevating him as a top champion.
You can check out some of the reactions from the eWrestlingNews.com comment section below:
Scuba Steve: “So Punk has become what he hated? a part timer that shows up and takes the title off the more deserving day in and day out no days off worker lol yet fans will still this one of them”
Here comes pain…. : “Shorter then I thought hoping Sami was going to make it to summer slam,, what a really surprise, interesting thou ….”
Froot: “Seth Rollins loses round one of a tournament to crown a #1 contender and can just walk out and get a free title match. CM Punk can sit at home for months and come back challenging for a title without earning that position and win the belt first night back and win the belt.
Meanwhile LA Knight spitting truths about this and the getting embarrassed by “the other Uso” and looking like a clown to Anoa’i World Order 2000.
Then again, AEW hasn’t been that much better with #1 contenders either, but not this just lazy.
Could have easily had Sami drop this at Summerslam while have him at least be vocally involved in a three way build, or even one on one. Him losing isn’t the issue with me, it’s the creatively bankrupt ways this company has been since the night after WM 40 that has been the issue.”
Colton Tyson: “It’s like the company has no direction. What was the point of any of this? It’s a swerve, bro.”
MiddleFingerPuppet: “Lol I knew Sami was a transitional champ and knew that pink was taking it. Was way too obvious being in Chicago. It was money.”
Jesse Sikora: “Stop watcing. You don”t like it so stop!!!”
Hon. Dr. Hairy J. Ballz Jr. II: “…I knew it, I knew it, I f’n knew it. I said it days ago that Sami would lose it very soon and that he was given the belt just to make the Saudi crowd happy…But to give it to Punkass???? He didn’t deserve it…”
OptimisticNihilism: “Cool and all, but please God let new faces into this title scene by next year. I’ve given up on this one already”
Kairi420: “I told you guys a lot of people did not like Sami as champion the amount of complaining I heard when he won was extra”
Juan Antonio Rivera: “Great match,Great result”
Xanta Claus: “At least the title is off Sami-midcard”
The Doctor of Swingonomics: “Poor Sami.”
Rob Thomas V: “What a short run for Sami with the title.”
John Jones: “A solid and significant Raw tonight.
Two title changes tonight. The tag titles go back to the Vision. Profits didn’t have the belts long.
CM Punk is back and already the Undisputed champion. Sami didn’t have the belt long.
This makes the chase for that belt different as it now involves four people.
Sol Ruca was they only one to successfully retain her title tonight with a nice match against Raquel. Thanks to Iyo as well evening the odds.
Most of the show flowed well and didn’t feel like it was dragging.
Mostly.
The crowd was hot and cold but mostly… warm.
A good show (not great) with 2 title changes.
Grade: B+”
Omar: “Wow. This is so WWE. What’s the point. Poor Sami. This is ridiculous. I’m glad I don’t watch this rubbish.”
TheVobb: “I’m not a fan of him but poor Sami.
So, taking the title off Cody was just so he can take it back from Punk later? I really hope Gunther is the one who takes it from Punk and not Cody.”
ryan: “That sucks. They used him a transitional champ in NXT too. Killed Sammy’s last year of booking. At least taking him to Summerslam would’ve gave him something.
First defense. Nothing to do now. Cry to or team with Gargano? Oh well”
Tyler: “Despite the name, I thought Punk had more class than this”
jamie darcy: “Punk has become everything he hated and everything he complained about!”
Zmrzel: “Not interested in Punk/Cody personally.”
Th_mssngr: “Ugh, disappointed but not surprised. Even Kofi got six months before he got fed to Brock.
One thought occurred – WWE is built by the names who work there. Yeah, there’s institutions like Wrestlemania, but that doesn’t mean anything without star power to headline it. My question is this: with WWE increaingly happy to shaft long term employees by reduced contracts and this kind of shoddy booking, what’s the plan for the future when the current crop of main eventers (who are all nearing the end of their prime status, if they haven’t already) retires without sufficient replacements?”
Jonathan Ledwig: “Why is no one talking about the match itself. Honestly anything punk is involved in turns out great. Loved it!”
Aris C: “Looks like the good old rule of “only guys that I like” established by Vince is still alive in WWE.”
Titancack: “Now that TKO is making so much money from advertising they don’t care about the Saudi deal anymore. They will take there money of course But they obviously wanted Sami to win the gold at their event. TKO said ok but soon after……screw him.”
TKOMania: “Yeah, well,.we had to put the title on Punk to satisfy him politically.”
