Welcome to another eWrestlingNews Question of the Day!
It was made official on Friday Night SmackDown that the Triple Threat match between CM Punk, Roman Reigns, and Seth Rollins will be the main event of Saturday night’s portion of WrestleMania 41.
My question for you today is “Do you think this is worth being the main event over the three other world title matches and other things that will be on the show?”
Remember to answer with your response in the comments below.
As far as my answer…
While I see the argument that people put out there about star power, and how there have been non-title main events for WrestleMania in the past, I still keep harping back on feeling that no, this isn’t truly coming across to me like it’s the right call.
I’m sure for all these years, CM Punk has envisioned himself in the main event of WrestleMania being that he’s either defending a world title or challenging for it, not that his storyline with Seth Rollins from a year prior was put on hold, he wrestled him twice, and in the meantime, Roman Reigns got thrown in there because The Rock doesn’t want to wrestle, and those three will be in a non-title feud with nothing on the line.
Yes, Hulk Hogan vs. Sid Justice was a main event with a terrible finish, Roman Reigns vs. The Undertaker even after the streak had ended was a main event, and so on. But having done things in the past that I feel are mistakes doesn’t in the slightest bit make it okay to continue making those mistakes (and that’s a life lesson to apply elsewhere, too—two wrongs don’t make a right, nor does a precedent of flaws justify allowing that to keep going, as it should in fact do the total opposite)
With how poor this Jey Uso vs. Gunther feud has been, I’m not even trying to argue that that story is more captivating than Punk/Rollins/Reigns. But again, WWE dropping the ball with that doesn’t mean the title itself shouldn’t be important. That also neglects the two women’s titles. And I’ll beat you to the argument there, too: I’ve hated this Tiffany Stratton and Charlotte Flair feud, and I think the Triple Threat between Iyo Sky, Bianca Belair, and Rhea Ripley hasn’t exactly been amazing, either.
My answer to that isn’t “so that means the Triple Threat is the right call”, but more so “so that means WWE should be doing everything in their power to make those other 3 stories better so that everyone in the fandom debates about how many of these are all worthy of the main event because of how great they are.”
A big issue that I have with this as a main event is that it doesn’t actually mean anything. If any of these three win, they don’t settle the score with the others, they don’t achieve any goals (other than Punk just being there, which is already finished once he makes his entrance), and WWE hasn’t even made it a #1 contender’s match.
If that happens, and this becomes a fight to see who faces Cody Rhodes, John Cena, Jey Uso, or Gunther at Backlash, it will make it mean considerably more, but it also still feels like an odd choice to me to close out the first night of WrestleMania.
I’m sure the match will be fun, and I’m a fan of all three of these guys, so I’m not complaining there. I just wish this whole card would have been structured better and these storylines would line up in a way that doesn’t scream to me that plans changed in late 2024/early 2025 and they’ve been scrambling ever since. If you have an entire year to plan, and unless something crazy happens like an injury, I see no reason why this wasn’t plotted out better.
