CM Punk is a two-time former AEW World Champion, but the Chicago-Made wrestler was reportedly not interested in holding gold.
Punk would win the AEW World title for the first time at Double or Nothing 2022, dethroning ‘Hangman’ Adam Page, but plans for his reign were ruined due to an injury.
Regaining the title at AEW All Out 2022 with a win over Jon Moxley, Punk was quickly stripped of the title for his post-show comments and his role in the backstage fight.
Speaking on his FTR podcast, Dax Harwood spoke about working with Punk, who was just happy to be back in wrestling.
“Punk was still so joyous and happy to be in the wrestling business. To be honest, he told me, when they were going to put the belt on him, that he didn’t want the belt. He said, ‘I just want to have fun,’ but he understood that Tony putting the belt on him would put AEW in a better light. He took it, begrudgingly a little bit, but he took the belt.”
Punk has been suspended from AEW since All Out and is the only person suspended at the time to not return or be fired.
It has been reported that Punk is seeking a buyout of his contract, one that AEW is in no rush to grant him, considering he could go to WWE.
