CM Punk announced on Friday night’s episode of AEW Rampage that he’s injured and will require surgery.
During his promo, he said the good news is that he can still come back “bigger, faster, stronger, and hungrier than before” and will prove why he’s the best in the world. Punk said he’s going to continue until the wheels fall off and they haven’t fallen off yet – it just so happens that one of them is broken.
Punk said he offered to drop the AEW World Title, but AEW President Tony Khan said he believes in him, and that this is just a bump in the road.
Despite this, it was later confirmed by Chris Jericho on commentary that CM Punk will remain World Champion but there will also be an Interim Champion crowned. This will begin to play out on next Wednesday night’s episode of AEW Dynamite.
We’ll see a battle royal kick off the show. The winner of that match will go on to face Jon Moxley for the Interim Title at Forbidden Door.
Eventually, the two titles will be combined once CM Punk is able to return from surgery. This was all very confusing and it seemed like changes were being made on the fly during the live broadcast.
As you know, Tony Khan often books long-term so these changes came at the very last minute.
We are working on getting further clarification as to if this is how things will be playing out.
