Backstage News On Why A Reunion Between Christian Cage & ‘Cope’ Hasn’t Happened Yet

New details have emerged about AEW’s original plans for Adam Copeland’s return to television.

Fightful Select is reporting that at one point, AEW had “major creative plans” lined up for FTR following their heel turn on Copeland. The angle was intended to lead to a reunion between Copeland and longtime tag-team partner Christian Cage, potentially culminating in a high-profile storyline at AEW All In 2025.

Sources say Copeland’s current absence wasn’t meant to be this long. There had reportedly been discussions about bringing him back at AEW Double or Nothing to begin the feud. However, those plans were shelved as Christian Cage was not yet finished with his storyline involving The Patriarchy.

Cage was said to be committed to completing his angle with Nick Wayne, emphasizing the time and storytelling investment already made.

Interestingly, FTR’s heel turn was originally pitched to happen against The Outrunners last year, but the direction changed when the chance to pivot the turn toward Copeland presented itself.

At this point, it’s uncertain whether AEW still plans to move forward with the Copeland–Christian reunion, or if that opportunity has now passed.
