This marks the end of a partnership spanning over two decades, during which Sony played a significant role in promoting WWE content in India. They were instrumental in marketing the product, co-promoting WWE live events held in the region, and even amplifying the profiles of WWE Superstars within the country.

The most recent five-year deal between WWE and Sony, valued at over $200 million, ensured that all weekly shows and pay-per-view events were available live on Sony’s television channels. These were accessible via cable, satellite, and internet providers, and also on the SonyLIV app through a premium subscription. In a cost-effective move to make WWE content more accessible, Sony introduced WWE Network as a subscription tier on SonyLIV in 2021, priced at less than $5 annually—similar to how Peacock operates in the U.S.

As WWE prepares globally for this seismic shift in distribution, the Indian market stands as a litmus test for how well premium streaming services can adapt to price-sensitive regions with entrenched consumer habits. Being the largest WWE viewership market in the world, the transition to Netflix could be a critical juncture in popularity trends in India, even as the professional wrestling industry continues to boom in the primary and lucrative markets comprising North America and Western Europe as part of WWE’s global expansion.
