Mai Sakurai Quits Marigold, Rossy Ogawa Issues Statement

Mai Sakurai is leaving Dream Star Fighting Marigold after announcing her departure at the October 3 Osaka event.

Her final match will take place at Marigold Grand Destiny on October 24 at Ryogoku Sumo Hall, after which she will take time off to nurse an injury.

Marigold founder Rossy Ogawa issued a statement on Twitter, noting that the decision came after several discussions and that Sakurai has been dealing with injuries. He wrote,

“Thank you for attending the Osaka event.

Regarding Mai Sakurai’s departure from the group, this decision was reached after several discussions with her. She has been dealing with a combination of injuries and medical conditions for quite some time, and we have respected her wish to focus on recovery and start fresh for the time being, leading to her departure. She has worked hard for us since our inception, but we understand that differences have emerged between her personal direction and that of the group.

In the early days, we focused on themes such as “incorporating the best of the Showa era” and “a policy of national isolation.” Nearly three years have passed since then. The organization is always evolving and changing. We are now moving forward with an eye toward the future of the wrestlers who are giving their all at Marigold. There are various comments out there, but each person’s truth lies in the future of the organization and the athletes. Rather than mocking the organization or individuals, we hope everyone enjoys a fun pro wrestling life together.”

Sakurai joined Marigold in 2024.
