Jey Uso’s time as WWE World Heavyweight Champion was never meant to be a long reign.

According to a report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE had planned Jey’s 51-day title run as a short-term storyline well in advance of WrestleMania 41. From the outset, the goal was to give “Main Event” Jey a major spotlight moment with a marquee win on WWE’s grandest stage — only to have him drop the title back to GUNTHER shortly afterward.

The quick title change was part of a broader creative strategy that leads directly into GUNTHER’s next high-profile match – a showdown with WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg. The two are set to clash at Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 12 at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

With the World Heavyweight Championship once again around GUNTHER’s waist, WWE is framing the Goldberg match as a retirement bout, with the title stakes adding extra weight. The show is also strategically positioned to compete directly with AEW’s All In: Texas pay-per-view event, which airs the same night.

Though Jey’s reign was short, insiders say his WrestleMania victory was a pivotal moment in establishing him as a true main event player.
