Major Backstage Update On The Future Of The AEW Continental Classic, Kenny Omega’s Status

A blockbuster showdown is now set for AEW All In 2025, as Kazuchika Okada will battle Kenny Omega in a high-stakes title unification match.

The match was made official during this week’s edition of AEW Summer Blockbuster, where it was confirmed that the AEW International Championship and AEW Continental Championship will be unified into a single title – the AEW Unified Championship.

Fightful Select is reporting that this bout has been in the works for nearly a year, with AEW locking in plans for Okada vs. Omega to headline All In 2025 as far back as December — before Omega’s return to New Japan Pro Wrestling.

While AEW reportedly never considered calling the new belt the “Intercontinental Championship,” internal discussions have positioned the AEW Unified Championship as a top-tier title — well above a mid-card designation.

The announcement has already had an effect on ticket sales. AEW reportedly moved more than 1,400 additional tickets in the past week alone, a boost directly tied to the match reveal.

Fans of the AEW Continental Classic can also breathe easy, as the tournament is expected to continue in future cycles despite the title merger.

And for those concerned about Kenny Omega’s status after the Summer Blockbuster segment — his apparent injury was part of a storyline and not legitimate.
