During a recent edition of “What Happened When” podcast, AEW broadcaster Tony Schiavone paid tribute to the late Steve “Mongo” McMichael.

On Steve McMichael: “A lot of people that say, ‘Yeah, but as a wrestler he was enh’, but you know, he was fine as a wrestler. And he was legitimately a bada*s. And not many wrestlers can truly say that, that they are legitimate bada*ses, and he was. So when you watched Steve McMichael work a match, you’re watching a man who could probably kick your a*s learning how to work. And that wasn’t always easy.

“They brought him into the Horsemen. I loved his promos because to me he was serious and cold in his promos about what he said. And not only that, away from the ring he was just a really good dude. And I really liked hanging out with him because… he made you feel safe. It’s like… ‘If we get in a f**king fight, I’m getting behind this guy.’ He was one of the toughest guys I’ve ever met.”

On McMichael being under pressure: “And to be put in the ring as a Horseman? That’s a big ask and that’s a lot of pressure to put on you, it really is. He was at a Starrcast we did in Chicago. So I found out Mongo was there and I said, ‘I’m gonna find that f**ker.’ So I went downstairs where he was signing autographs. And I went up and said, ‘I don’t know if you remember me.’ He said, ‘Don’t ever tell me that! Don’t ever say that to me! Of course, I remember who you are, Jesus!’ Then he looked at me, the way he does, looking down with his eyes up. He said, ‘See those three girls over there?’ I said, ‘Yep.’ He just said, ‘They’re on scholarship.’”
