Welcome to another eWrestlingNews Question of the Day!
Last night on WWE SmackDown, LA Knight won the United States Championship back from Shinsuke Nakamura. It had been a few months, but it’s back around his waist right in time for WrestleMania 41.
With it being very unlikely he will drop it ahead of time—albeit not impossible—plans are probably in place for how he will defend the title on The Grandest Stage of Them All. If he can make it out of there with the belt, he’s still going to drop it at some point, and those plans may already be in place, too.
My question for you today is three-fold: “Who is the biggest threat to dethrone LA Knight, and if you don’t think that’s what happens at WrestleMania, what would you do with him in the meantime and when would you have him drop the title?”
Remember to answer with your response in the comments below.
As far as my answer…
I worded this question this way mostly because I didn’t want to shoot the topic down at “Do you think he’ll retain at Mania?” being a yes or no. We still don’t know who his opponent would be, so it’s hard to predict that would also be when he would drop the title.
This card is starting to fill up, and there aren’t many spots left, but there are still lots of people who could and might not be on the card. For example, I don’t have a lot of faith Santos Escobar is making it to WrestleMania in singles competition. He strikes me as a guy in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal, if they continue that again in some fashion this year, rather than taking his story with Los Garza into a match and/or fighting Knight again for the United States title and taking up a spot that would otherwise go to bigger names. Again, love the guy, but they’re not going to pick that match over making sure The Judgment Day are on the card.
The same goes for Jimmy Uso, who is just hanging around, as well as Andrade. Maybe The Miz and Carmelo Hayes are involved, as they don’t seem to be taking Melo Don’t Miz into the tag team division’s scuffle as of late. There’s always a chance this loops into Drew McIntyre and Damian Priest somehow, but I feel like they’re more likely to just get a singles match themselves.
A multi-man match seems almost inevitable, as it could possibly also include Nakamura (if he’s not just also in the ATGMBR). But I think an even more likely grouping would be LA Knight, Braun Strowman, Jacob Fatu, and Solo Sikoa all fighting for the title. That is, of course, unless Strowman and Fatu get their own gimmick match and it’s just Knight against Sikoa, who needs something to do—and a fight against Fatu is my preference, but they could be holding off on that.
If by some chance Fatu is in this match, then I think he wins the title. Ultimately, he is who I think the belt will go to next. But I overall hope that Fatu wins the belt after WrestleMania and fights Sikoa, allowing Knight to retain over a group of guys like Escobar, Andrade, Jimmy Uso, and maybe Hayes.
